What is Sentiment Analysis?

Voice Feedback Glossary • 4 min read
Sentiment Analysis is an AI technique that identifies and classifies the emotional tone of text or speech as positive, negative, or neutral. In voice feedback, sentiment analysis processes transcribed audio to determine how a speaker feels about a topic, product, or experience.

How Sentiment Analysis Works

Modern sentiment analysis uses natural language processing (NLP) models trained on millions of text examples. When applied to voice feedback, the process involves two steps. First, the voice recording is transcribed into text. Then, the NLP model analyzes the text for emotional indicators -- word choice, sentence structure, emphasis patterns, and contextual meaning.

The output is typically a score on a scale (for example, 0 to 100, where 0 is extremely negative and 100 is extremely positive) along with a categorical label: positive, negative, or neutral. More advanced systems also provide a confidence score indicating how certain the AI is about its classification.

Why Sentiment Analysis Matters

Without sentiment analysis, reviewing voice feedback would require a human to listen to every recording and make a subjective judgment. Sentiment analysis automates this process, enabling organizations to process hundreds or thousands of voice messages and instantly understand the overall emotional landscape of their feedback.

Key benefits include:

Sentiment Analysis vs. Tone Detection

Sentiment analysis tells you whether someone feels positively or negatively overall. Tone detection goes deeper, identifying specific emotions like frustration, gratitude, sarcasm, or urgency. A message can have negative sentiment but a grateful tone (for example, a complaint that acknowledges your effort to help). Both dimensions are valuable for understanding the full picture.

Limitations to Be Aware Of

Sentiment analysis is not perfect. Sarcasm, cultural differences in expression, and domain-specific language can confuse the model. For example, "That's just great" might be genuinely positive or deeply sarcastic depending on tone of voice. This is why voice feedback platforms like VoiceZero combine text-based sentiment analysis with audio tone analysis for more accurate results.
